Chauncey Rose Middle School

History

Chauncey Rose Middle School was established in August of 1993 and currently houses approximately six hundred fifty sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students. The school offers a comprehensive educational program for all students. Prior to August of 1993, Chauncey Rose was a junior high school for seventh, eighth, and ninth grade students. The junior high school building was completed in July of 1972.

The 8.99 acre school site was originally used for the Rose Polytechnic Institute which was founded in January of 1875. The site was later used for the former Gerstmeyer Technical High School. This high school prepared students for vocations, business, and college. The school closed in June 1971. The Gerstmeyer gymnasium and related arts building still stand and are used by the Chauncey Rose student body.

The school was named for, and the site was donated by a 19th century Terre Haute man named Chauncey Rose. Chauncey Rose, philanthropic business and civic leader, built his fortune on honesty, frugality, and hard work. He used his wealth generously for the care of orphans, medicine for the sick, and the education of youth.
