Crawford School was called the Third Ward School until 1906 when it was renamed Crawford School. It was located on the northeast corner of Third and Farrington Streets. Crawford was a ten-room school--- eight as classrooms. The school had no indoor plumbing. The basement was heated by coal stoves. The first principal of Crawford was Mrs. Clara A. Graff. In 1905 improvements included two additional rooms to the back of the building with a deeper basement and a new furnace for a hot water heating system. Indoor plumbing was also installed.
The ground breaking for the new Crawford School was Tuesday, December 13, 1960. The building was erected at Fifth and Crawford Streets. The building took 11 months to construct. Classes began on October 30,1961 with an enrollment of 220.
The new Crawford School had 8 classrooms, 4 specialized teaching rooms, a library, and additional office suites. Juliet Peddle was the architect of the school. Crawford is a brick building that cost $475,212.00.
